Jasmin Hagleitner a.k.a. eekhoorn was born in 1985 in Innsbruck, a small town situated somewhere inbetween the alps of Austria. Raised in the mountains by a Super-Nintendo console and her patient parents she soon started to discover her passion for japanese character design and surreal fantasy worlds. The dutch psydonym eekhoorn is the result of Jasmin´s obsession for squirrels that developed durring her years at the graphic design highschool. It was a matter of time and now she turned into a redheaded squirrel herself and is always busy with storing ideas and memories on a piece of paper or on her computer. As a Macromedia Freehand child eekhoorn´s style is strongly influenced by her graphic design background which is shown in her artwork with clear edges, reduced shapes and bright eye catching colors. She also composites these clear vector creatures in a new sometimes ironic context by combining them with landscape photos. This contrast could also been seen as the result of a multimedia childhood in the unique nature of tyrol. Her style is still affected by her love to the japanese culture and especially to animes, mangas, vinyl toys and kawaii character design (kawaii is japanese for cute, pretty, adorable). At first sight kawaii art seems to be a bit childish but indeed there usually is more to the cute chars than meets the eye.
